Litter box training your rabbit can be done easily for some and for some not so easy. Although litter box training can seem like a daunting task, I like to think of it as no more difficult than training a cat. This method will work for most rabbits of all breeds.
- When you take your rabbit home immediately place them in the litter box. If there is any droppings in the carrier place those in the litter box as well.
- Placing food and hay near the litter box is
helpful since rabbits tend to poop where they eat. - If you are planning on free roaming your bunny, initially limiting their space can be helpful.
- If your rabbit poops or pees outside of the litter box, sweep it up and put it in the litter box.
- If your rabbit is consistently going in a spot outside the litter box, move the litter box to that spot.
- Every time you clean out their litter box, place a few of their droppings back into the litter box to create a familiar scent.
- Make sure your rabbit has constant access to their litter box (don’t place their litter box behind a door that gets shut constantly).
- If your rabbit constantly goes in several different places you may want to consider an additional litter box.
And that is how you litter box train your rabbit. Just like every person is different, every rabbit is different. So it can take a couple of days for some, and weeks for others.
